Shakespeare in Shoreditch

Performance and Place at the Curtain Playhouse, 1597–99

Before the Globe, Shakespeare's company made its home in Shoreditch. Made possible by the Museum of London Archaeology's 2016 excavation of the Curtain Playhouse, this is the first sustained account of Shakespeare's dramatic practice there between 1597 and 1599, bringing together theatre history, textual studies, playhouse archaeology and performance.

Site-Specific Shakespeare

Cambridge University Press

From ruined convents to rooftop gardens, car parks to Zoom calls, theatre-makers around the world stage Shakespeare in unexpected places. Drawing on interviews, case studies and ten years of practice, Site-Specific Shakespeare argues that they share a tactical intelligence that turns the limits of a space into creative opportunity, and maps five kinds of site: revenant, found, shifting, green and viral.
